The Halloween Plan

Wendy is always excited about Halloween and particularly loves having Trick or Treaters come to our house. In her bid to beat the rush, she purchased a bunch of candy about a week in advance not realizing that I would eat most of it in the ensuing days.

On the day of Halloween, she was able to purchase more candy and successfully hid it somewhere in the house.

That day we were also both scrambling a bit on the costume front.

I put in virtually no time at all, and asked Wendy on Halloween eve what my options were. She indicated that I could wear a pajama onesie (with ninjas on it) that we purchased a few years prior. That is what I went with. We also had a rabbit’s head in our inventory from several Easters prior, so I added this to my outfit.

Wendy took a little more time on hers. She found a pair of pajamas, put on some makeup, and had a friend work on her hair. She was transformed into a Christmas Elf.

And then the Trick or Treaters came. Both adults and kids alike commented on how cute Wendy’s costume was. The adults chuckled at mine, asking whether I was a rabbit in pajamas. The little kids showed a mixture of curiosity and perhaps a slight tinge of horror.

A cleansing hot shower or bath

After the Trick or Treaters were done, Wendy and I wandered through our neighborhood wearing our costumes. I saw some neighbors with the most creative costumes that they clearly worked on for several days. These costumes ranged from a group of friends dressed as every character from National Lampoon’s Vacation to a former offensive lineman dressing as Scooby Doo.

Most were thoughtful, and included makeup, props, and elements of clothing all working together to depict a single theme. Very little was “off the shelf.” My outfit was more of a mishmash of a couple of items you would never catch me wearing except in the accompanying picture. It was put together with very little thought, and only done because Wendy had asked me to wear a costume for the Trick or Treaters.

Many folks have a financial plan that can be a mishmash of different strategies and products suggested by friends, coworkers, and advisors. However, these strategies are not always appropriate and are often not working towards a clear goal. There are often major gaps in these strategies as well.

Setting the mood with incense

The costumes I liked the most reminded me of a good financial plan. Every aspect of their costume worked together, and it was clear that they put a lot of time and work into it. They had a goal, they didn’t throw things together in haste, and they were clearly invested in the project.

A good financial plan is a collaborative effort between a planner or a team of planners, and a client who is committed to the plan’s success. No strategies are arrived at in a vacuum but are rather intended to accomplish the client’s overriding goals.

Setting the mood with incense

Most investments are meant to be long term. Always evaluate whether the time horizon required for an investment to succeed matches your timeline for liquidity.

Imagine in mine and Wendy’s case if the doors and the windows locked just as we were trying to leave or that someone came down the stairs just as we were wandering around the main level.
